The City of Olympia passed a Resolution to Overturn Citizens United on October 2, 2012. Citizens who signed petitions locally to create a 28th Amendment to abolish corporations claiming the rights of living humans, and overturning Citizens United, celebrate this initial step forward.
A next critical step is to address the 125-year Supreme Court history of granting progressively more human rights to corporations. Until multinational corporations are denied 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th 7th and 14th Amendment rights, and return to something resembling early State corporate charter regulations (circa 1880), we will see pleas to overturn Citizens United denied.
We saw this refusal to honor the wishes of 84 % of Democrats, 79% of Independents, and 68% of Republicans[1], in June, 2012. The Supreme Court rejects campaign finance limits, refuses to overturn Citizens United ruling.[2] We are not being listened to by those who control our government when we call for abolishing corporate “personhood,” which is rooted in our Supreme Court history of gradually giving corporations more human rights.
We wish to honor the life work of Craig Salins, who directed Washington Public Campaigns, in a tireless, focused effort to restore rights of the people to cast votes in clean elections. Toward that goal of retaining a democracy, which the people control rather than multinational corporations, we continue your work, Craig. You inspire us to continue moving forward until elections are fully restored to the People, and corporations have no financial role in supporting candidates at any level of government. Much more must be done toward restoring corporations to their obligations and responsibilities to serve the People.
